Gallery Program

Kerstin Engholm founded the gallery in Vienna in 1999 and quickly succeeded in establishing a unique space with an international reputation. The program of artists is based on long-term friendships with and a deep interest in the work of artists such as Hendrik Krawen and Dirk Skreber, whom Kerstin Engholm has known for over 20 years. When Klaus Engelhorn joined the gallery in 2004 as a silent partner, it became Engholm Engelhorn Galerie and continued its ambitious program under this new name.

Engholm Engelhorn Galerie works with young Austrian and international artists that follow a broadly conceptual approach, independent of the medium they use. With this particular focus, the gallery assumes the challenge of producing and presenting complex works often developed specifically for the gallery space. The gallery's participation in the process of artistic production extends to large-scale, off-site institutional projects such as Hans Schabus's project for the Austrian Pavilion at the Biennale di Venezia 2005.

In addition, Engholm Engelhorn Galerie supports public awareness and the discussion of artistic positions with an ongoing series of talks and lectures that accompanies its exhibition program. From its very beginnings the gallery has participated in international art fairs such as Art Basel (Statements 2000, 2001, 2008), Art Basel Miami Beach (2003 – 2008), Art Cologne (2002, 2004), Art Brussels (2002), Kunst Wien (2000 – 2003), VIENNAFAIR (2005-2008), Artissima Turin (2002) and the Armory Show New York (2003, 2004, 2008).

The gallery is located in the emerging 4th Viennese district, surrounded by important institutions such as the Vienna Secession, the Generali Foundation, the Kunsthalle Vienna, the new Museum Quarter and other contemporary galleries. The Engholm Engelhorn Gallery is marked by an open structure, the office and production areas being visible and accessible to the public, thus allowing some understanding of the daily work routine in a gallery, and also an impression of organisation structures within the art world.
